How to Clean Dryer Vents in the Triad

While a well maintained clothes dryer can make home life more convenient, clogged dryer vents can make for a world of stress. At Advanced Appliance Service, Inc., we know that safety and efficiency are some of the most important features any home appliance can have. Let’s take a look at why cleaning dryer vents is so important for Triad homeowners and walk through the steps.

Clean dryer vents increase home safety in Greensboro, NC

A dryer vent allows for exhaust from the dryer to exit your home safely. Over time, lint, dust and other debris accumulate in the vent and the extension tubing attached to it. This clogging can cause major safety hazards in your home. Without proper ventilation, conditions that lead to fires can occur or carbon monoxide leaks can occur. Common indicators that your dryer isn’t ventilating properly include clothes that don’t fully dry, increasing amounts of lint in the lint collector after loads, and extreme levels of heat coming from the dryer and clothes during and after a load.

Disconnect your dryer to start vent cleaning

When it’s time to clean out your dryer vent, start by disconnecting your dryer. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet and detach it from its gas fuel source. Pull the dryer about two feet off of the wall, then unscrew the vent extension tube from the back of your machine. It’s now safe to clean out the vent.

Clean out all lint and debris from dryer

Use a vacuum to remove any lint, dust or debris from the ventilation hole on the back of the dryer. Also vacuum the extension tubing, using a pipe cleaner to remove any lint that has accumulated in the middle of the tube as opposed to the ends. Be sure to clean out the exterior exhaust vent as well. The exhaust vent on the outside of your home is what allows your dryer to expel dangerous heat and carbon monoxide outdoors instead of inside your house.

Safely reconnect your dryer

When you have finished cleaning, fasten all connections and plug your dryer back into its electric and gas fuel sources. Your dryer is now safe to use.

In addition to operating more safely, a dryer with a clean ventilation system will work more efficiently and consume less energy, lowering your monthly utility bills. If your dryer vents are seriously clogged, or if your dryer isn’t working as well as it should, you need professional servicing.
