In between major AC repair and maintenance, there are several things you can do to keep your system running at an optimal level. Air filters considerably affect how well your air conditioning unit performs and they are simple to replace. If you notice that your unit isn’t performing at its peak, first change out the current filters with new ones.
While they aren’t meant to last forever, air filters are disposable. Over time they collect debris and dust which lowers their effectiveness. During the summer months when you are using your air conditioner often, you should replace your filters once every month or two. If you don’t know when you should change out your air filters, give them a quick look over to see how dirty they are.
It’s important to replace your air filters before you contact an AC repair technician to examine your HVAC system. Filters come in different sizes so it’s important to know what size you need before buying them. It’s probably best to buy the ones that come in packs so you will have new filters when you need them.
To replace a filter, you only have to remove the cover and remove the dirty one. Be gentle when removing the dusty filter so you don’t get dirt and debris everywhere. Once you’ve placed the new filter in, place the cover back on and you are done.
There are different ratings for separate filters. You should purchase the filter that meets your specific needs depending on the amount of filtration you desire. Most homeowners only purchase air filters for the ducts that leave the air conditioner. Others place filters on both ducts and return vents. By doing this, less dust settles in the home and makes cleaning easier. If someone in your family has severe allergies, it’s extremely important to replace air filters regularly for a healthy home environment.
Replacing air filters will improve the level at which your HVAC unit performs but it is not the only way. Older air conditioners may need repairs to run at optimal levels.
