Best Thermostat Settings for Vacation in Winston-Salem, NC

Should You Turn Off Your A/C or Leave it Running?

Summertime is upon us and that means it’s time to round up the family, put a hold on your mail, take the pets to your favorite boarding kennel, and head out on vacation. Maybe you plan on heading to the beach, or you might prefer the cooler temperatures of the mountains. Whatever your preference, it’s great to spend quality time with your family, rest, relax, and enjoy time away from work.

It’s time to make your vacation checklist:

  • Get all your gear packed up and ready. Check
  • Stop your newspaper and mail. Check.
  • Clean out the refrigerator. Check.
  • Take the pets to the kennel. Check
  • Turn off the air conditioner. Wait…..That may not be the best thing?

Many people may think that turning off your air conditioner is a good idea. Why not? It saves you energy right?  So, it saves you money. This sounds pretty good, but here are the reasons why you should leave your air conditioner running while on vacation……just turn the temperature up a little higher.

High Humidity in Winston-Salem

You’re used to hot and humid summers of the Triad. The air feels so thick you can cut it with a knife, and you feel sticky every time you walk outside.

Humidity enters into your home when you open the doors, through cracks and leaks in ductwork, and poor insulation around windows and doors.

Your air conditioner is your first line of defense against humid conditions in your home. While some could use dehumidifiers, most homes can be cool and comfortable without them. That’s your air conditioner doing its job!  An efficient air conditioner; with the proper run time, will reduce humidity and cool your home properly.

If you turn off your air conditioner; even if only for a few days, the humidity will build up in your home and feel hot and uncomfortable when you return. Too much humidity in a home contributes to microbial and bacteria growth and can be bad for your furniture and hardwoods.

Don’t Let The Heat Build Up,  It’s Hard Work For Your A/C!

If you turn off your air conditioner in the summer for days at a time, the temperature in your home will most likely be in the upper eighties to nineties when you return. Your air conditioner will have to work harder than it should to try to reach your desired temperatures. Not only will it take an extended period of time to cool your home, it will make your air conditioner work much harder than normal.  Also, it’s not very energy efficient for your air conditioning system. Your home’s A/C uses more electricity each time it starts, than when it is actually running. It’s far better for the air conditioner to maintain temperatures than to have to drastically cool your home. It takes so much more energy to cool your home when the A/C has not been running for an extended period of time. So, turning off the air conditioner won’t actually save energy.  It could actually cost you more!

What Is Your Best Option in Winston-Salem?

Turn up the temperature in your home a few degrees; even three to five degrees will save you money, but it will keep your home from over-heating. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set your thermostat to begin cooling your home before you even make it home.  Remember to keep your blinds and curtains closed to keep out direct sunlight.
